Technical FAQ
What is the difference between Normal Test and Blind Test?
Normal Test is used when the transformer winding connection and vector group are already known. Entering the correct transformer configuration allows the instrument to calculate the expected ratio and provide the most complete comparison. Blind Test is used when the vector group is unknown. The instrument analyses the measured phase relationships and identifies the likely vector group automatically while still providing the measured ratio.
Is a neutral connection required for three-phase S456 testing?
No. For standard three-phase testing, the S456 can measure using the three high-voltage and three low-voltage line terminals without a neutral connection. The instrument measures the relevant line-to-line responses and applies the configured or automatically identified winding geometry to calculate the equivalent transformer ratio and vector group.
Why is the measured ratio different from the transformer nameplate ratio?
First confirm that the correct tap position, rated high-voltage value, rated low-voltage value and vector group have been entered. A difference can also result from incorrect lead connections, testing the wrong terminals, contact problems at the clamps or an actual winding or tap-changer defect. Compare the measured ratio error across all phases and taps; a consistent input error normally affects all results, while a localized transformer problem may affect only one phase or tap.
